For most patients, we recommend a professional cleaning and comprehensive exam every six months. However, patients with a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or certain systemic health conditions may benefit from more frequent visits — typically every three to four months. At Smile Era Dental, Dr. Philip or Dr. Thomas will recommend the visit schedule that makes the most sense for your individual oral health needs and history.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling a child's first dental visit around their first birthday or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth — whichever comes first. Starting early allows us to monitor tooth development, apply preventive treatments such as fluoride and sealants at the right time, and — most importantly — help your child build a positive, comfortable relationship with dental care from the very beginning.

A comprehensive exam at Smile Era Dental is far more than a quick visual check. It includes a full tooth-by-tooth evaluation for decay and damage, a periodontal screening measuring pocket depths around every tooth, an oral cancer screening of all soft tissues, a bite and jaw assessment, a review of all existing restorations, radiographic imaging interpretation, and a medical history review. It gives us a complete, detailed picture of your oral health — not just a snapshot.

Not necessarily at every visit — the frequency of X-rays is based on your individual risk level, history, and clinical findings. For most adult patients with good oral health, bitewing X-rays are recommended once a year and a full-mouth series every three to five years. For patients with a higher risk of decay or bone loss, more frequent imaging may be appropriate. At Smile Era Dental, we use low-radiation digital X-rays and recommend imaging only when it provides meaningful diagnostic value for your care.

A general dentist — like Dr. Philip and Dr. Thomas at Smile Era Dental — provides comprehensive dental care across a broad range of services and is your primary dental care provider. Dental specialists — such as periodontists, endodontists, orthodontists, and oral surgeons — have completed additional years of specialty training focused on a specific area of dentistry. Most patients can have the majority of their dental needs addressed by a skilled general dentist. When specialist care is needed, Dr. Philip and Dr. Thomas will coordinate a referral to a trusted specialist partner.

Many cavities — particularly in their early stages — cause no pain or visible symptoms at all. When symptoms do appear, they may include sensitivity to sweets or hot and cold temperatures, a visible dark spot or hole in the tooth, or pain when biting. This is precisely why regular dental exams and X-rays are so important — they allow us to detect cavities in their earliest, most treatable stage, before symptoms develop and before more extensive treatment is needed.

A routine professional cleaning — called a prophylaxis — at Smile Era Dental includes removal of plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces and along the gumline, polishing to remove surface stains and leave teeth smooth, thorough flossing between every tooth, fluoride application where recommended, and personalized oral hygiene coaching. In addition to the cleaning, your appointment will include a comprehensive exam by Dr. Philip or Dr. Thomas and any necessary diagnostic imaging.
