The Future of Dental Diagnosis, Right Here in Chicago
At Smile Era Dental, we believe every patient deserves care that is not just compassionate but genuinely precise. That's why we've invested in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging, one of the most powerful and advanced diagnostic tools available in dentistry today.
While most dental offices rely solely on traditional 2D X-rays, Smile Era Dental goes further. Our CBCT technology gives Dr. Josh Philip or Dr. Soumya Thomas a detailed, three-dimensional view of your teeth, jawbone, nerves, sinuses, and surrounding structures, all from a single, fast, comfortable scan. The result is a level of diagnostic clarity that simply isn't possible with conventional imaging alone.
If you're looking for a dentist in Chicago, IL who uses the latest technology to deliver more accurate, more personalized care, you've found the right place.

What Is CBCT Imaging?
CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. It is a specialized form of digital imaging that uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam to capture hundreds of images from multiple angles around your head in a single rotation. These images are then compiled by sophisticated software into a precise, three-dimensional model of your oral and facial structures.
Unlike a traditional flat dental X-ray, which shows a two-dimensional snapshot, CBCT imaging reveals:
- The exact position, shape, and depth of every tooth, including unerupted or impacted teeth
- Jawbone density, volume, and quality
- The precise location of nerves, sinuses, and blood vessels
- The three-dimensional relationship between teeth, roots, and surrounding bone
- Early signs of bone loss, cysts, tumors, or other abnormalities not visible on standard X-rays
- Airway structure and sinus health
How Is CBCT Different From a Regular Dental X-Ray?
| Traditional 2D X-Ray | CBCT 3D Imaging | |
|---|---|---|
| Image Type | Flat, two-dimensional |
Full three-dimensional model |
| Structures Visible | Teeth and limited bone | Teeth, bone, nerves, sinuses, airways |
| Diagnostic Accuracy | Standard | Significantly enhanced |
| Treatment Planning | General | Highly precise and detailed |
| Procedure Time | 1–2 minutes | Under 60 seconds |
| Radiation | Low | Very low, comparable to a standard series of dental X-rays |

Is CBCT Imaging Safe?
Yes. Patient safety is always our top priority at Smile Era Dental, and we want you to feel fully informed and confident about every aspect of your care.
CBCT imaging uses significantly less radiation than a traditional medical CT scan. The radiation dose from a dental CBCT scan is comparable to and in many cases no greater than a standard full-mouth series of conventional dental X-rays. The scan itself takes less than 60 seconds and is completely non-invasive and painless.
As with all imaging, our doctors follow the ALARA principle — As Low As Reasonably Achievable — meaning we only recommend CBCT imaging when the clinical benefit clearly outweighs any minimal risk, and only when it will meaningfully improve the accuracy of your diagnosis or treatment plan.
