Helping You Keep Your Natural Tooth
Few phrases in dentistry carry as much unnecessary fear as "root canal." The reality? A modern root canal procedure is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling and it is one of the most important and effective treatments in dentistry for relieving severe tooth pain, eliminating infection, and saving a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.
At Smile Era Dental,we provide gentle, precise root canal therapy for patients across Chicago's northwest side and surrounding communities. Using advanced diagnostic tools including our in-house CBCT 3D imaging technology, we approach every root canal with a level of precision and thoroughness that leads to more complete treatment, fewer complications, and better long-term outcomes.
Most root canals are performed at Smile Era Dental. However, after evaluating your tooth, Dr. Philip and Dr. Thomas may recommend referral to a specialist for certain complex cases when it is in your best interest.

What Is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy, also called endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure that removes infected, inflamed, or dying tissue from inside the tooth. To understand why this is necessary, it helps to understand the anatomy of a tooth.
Every tooth has three distinct layers:
Enamel - The hard, outer protective layer of the tooth, the white surface you see.
Dentin - The layer beneath the enamel, a slightly softer, yellowish tissue that makes up the bulk of the tooth structure.
Pulp - The innermost layer of the tooth, a soft tissue containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that runs from the crown of the tooth down through the root canals to the tip of each root. The pulp is responsible for tooth development and sensitivity, but once a tooth is fully mature, it can survive without the pulp.
When the pulp becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed due to deep decay, a crack or fracture, repeated dental procedures, or trauma, it cannot heal on its own. The infection can spread from the pulp through the root tips into the surrounding bone, causing an abscess and potentially serious systemic health consequences if left untreated.
Root canal therapy resolves this by removing the infected or inflamed pulp tissue, thoroughly cleaning and shaping the root canals, and sealing the tooth to prevent reinfection, saving the natural tooth and eliminating the source of pain and infection.
